Interview with Mari Granström
Reflections and Vision
What do you see as Origin by Ocean’s most significant achievements this year?
We’ve had many successes this year, but the most significant has been the strengthening of our teamwork, which has propelled us forward despite challenges. Completing the pilot phase of our process scale-up was a key milestone, equipping us with the tools for commercialization. We also introduced innovative products to the market, demonstrating their fit and value. This year has brought us focus, execution power, and unwavering dedication to our vision.
How have our partnerships and innovations shaped the narrative around regenerative practices?
Our partnerships have been transformative, inspiring us and validating our approach. Together, we’ve shown how the chemical industry can embrace regenerative practices. Collaboration has been key, as our partners have demonstrated genuine willingness to reimagine their products and practices. It’s thrilling to see how our efforts today will shape value chains in the next decade.
What has been the most rewarding part of leading the team through 2024?
Watching the team step into leadership roles has been incredibly rewarding. I’m honored to lead such a dedicated group of Oceansavers, who allow me to lead authentically and embrace imperfection. This year has been one of growth—individually and collectively—and I’m grateful for the authenticity and strength each team member brings.
Looking Ahead
What opportunities do you see for Origin by Ocean in 2025?
We’re gearing up for more maturity, greater impact, and steady growth. 2025 will be pivotal as we move closer to commercialization and prepare for our first production site by 2027.
How do you envision scaling our impact in the coming years?
Scaling our operations naturally scales our positive impact. Regenerative business growth means more harmful seaweed removed, more emissions avoided, more ocean nutrients balanced, and fewer fossil-based chemicals used. This also drives local business ecosystems with a global reach, particularly in the Caribbean, where sargassum removal has immense potential.
Are there particular goals you are excited about in the next phase of our journey?
Building the first-of-its-kind production site in Finland is incredibly exciting. It’s a bold step into the unknown, but I thrive on creating new pathways, and the partnerships and products this will bring to market inspire me.
Personal Insights
What keeps you inspired as a leader in the regenerative space?
The tangible change we create. I’m proud that OBO leads by example, proving regenerative business is not just possible—it’s the future. Being at the forefront of this transformation is deeply motivating.
If you had one message to share with our Oceansavers community, what would it be?
Start small, but dream big—and begin now. Every action matters, and we all have a role to play in shaping a regenerative future.
Thank you for being an integral part of our journey. Together, we’re redefining what’s possible—washing the oceans and creating a future that’s truly regenerative.
Warm wishes for a joyful holiday season and a fantastic new year ahead!
