Alginate

Our alginate stands out because it offers more than just viscosity-enhancing properties.

IN COSMETICS our OceanThix™ alginate enhances skin hydration in both leave-on products like skincare and rinse-off products like shampoo, body wash etc. It also provides film-forming capabilities that are useful in cosmetics, textile and packaging industries.

IN THE FOOD INDUSTRY, traditional alginate serves only as a thickening agent. Our OceanThix™ alginate shows synergistic & stabilizing properties when combined with other natural thickeners, improving the texture and the mouth feel of products. It can also be used as a vegan alternative to animal-derived gelatin.

Traditional alternatives in the cosmetic and textile industries typically include synthetic petrochemical polymers like carbomers and acrylates which are generally non-biodegradable.

IN PACKAGING, alginate provides a natural alternative to petrochemical-based resins & coatings.

Fucoidan

Fucoidan offers an innovative, responsible alternative to some of the most popular cosmetic ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, which currently is more than a 10 billion dollar industry that continues to grow.

Fucoidan could be the next-generation hyaluronic acid in the cosmetics sector as it hydrates, soothes & nourishes the skin.

Many moisturizing ingredients, including Hyaluronic Acid, are derived from mass farming of sugars, often involving land and water use, deforestation & biodiversity loss and compete with the food supply chain.

Our OceanBoost™ Fucoidan does not compete with food sources as it is sourced from sargassum, which is not used for human consumption.

Fucoxanthin

Fucoxanthin serves as an innovative, responsible alternative to commonly used, petrochemical-based, cosmetic ingredients, such as synthetic vitamins and antioxidants. Natural antioxidants typically come from cultivated feedstock like sunflower, soybean, and canola, which require land & water use, pesticides & compete with the food supply chain.

Astaxanthin, primarily used as an antioxidant in nutritional supplements, is mostly produced synthetically, while fucoxanthin offers similar antioxidant benefits and is much more sustainable.

Mycosporine

MAA is one of the few NATURAL UV BOOSTERS available worldwide. Our MAA comes from fully renewable feedstock that does not require farming on land.

When used in suncare, MAA can significantly reduce the amount of harmful and non-biodegradable, approved UV filters, resulting in a better environmental impact. While these UV filters remain necessary for protecting individuals from sun exposure and skin cancer, MAA enables a substantial decrease in their dosage & use.

What is hydrogen sulfide? Does it impact Origin by Ocean’s products?
Hydrogen sulfide is described as a “colorless gas known for its pungent ‘rotten egg’ odor at low concentrations” (OSHA, n.d.). The gas is toxic and exposure to it can cause a range of health issues, from mild to severe. After 48 hours of reaching land, sargassum begins to rot, releasing harmful gases called hydrogen sulfide and ammonia (Nibbs, 2024).

This means that hydrogen sulfide is not present in the sargassum itself. The hydrogen sulfide is only released as a reaction when the sargassum is decomposing.

No, the hydrogen sulfide does not impact our products. Our sargassum is collected before it begins to rot, and is stored safely for transportation, meaning that the hydrogen sulfide is neither released nor present in our products.

Are Origin by Ocean’s PRODUCTS safe?

Yes, Origin by Ocean’s products are safe.

Sargassum can accumulate pesticides and heavy metals (including arsenic), so, in our biorefining process, we treat the sargassum in a way that removes the pollutants, ensuring that it is safe to use. Due to this process, our ingredients are safe and purified.

The heavy metals (including arsenic) that are removed from the sargassum are disposed of properly, according to our safety guidelines and local regulations.
